Building a world where all people can be happy

Grant to Amizade

Clean Water is the foundation of healthy diet, hygiene, and sanitation. In Karagwe, Tanzania, water is scarce, and the cheapest, most simple, and most effective solution to the Karagwe water shortage is the construction of rooftop water harvesting systems; i.e., capture the run-off during the wet season for use during the dry season.  Amizade is in the middle of a 3-year program to install a minimum of 36 water harvesting systems, with labor and materials provided by local and global volunteers. The first $10,000 grant from the AllPeopleBeHappy foundation in 2008 led to the installation of the first 6 water-harvesting systems utilizing plastic cisterns attached to 6 houses.  In 2009, more family sized water tank systems were built and installed, but this time with the use of all local materials.  Furthermore, the community decided to build a 300,000 liter water tank in the village of Chonyoyo.  This tank will be feed by gutters running along the roof of a very large, food storage building also being constructed.  The water from this project will provide an incredible amount of relief for the community, providing several hundred people with access to clean water.  (www.amizade.org)
