Creating Equitable Disaster Resilience (CEDeR): Vision 2030 Contribution Summary
Who
We are a network of community organizations, educators, and researchers. We work with:
- Community-based and Non-governmental Organizations include :
- Caras con Causa (Puerto Rico), Fondes Amandes (Trinidad and Tobago), Nido de Vida (Ecuador), The Petersfield Galloway Benevolent Society (Jamaica), , and AllPeopleBeHappy.
- University Partners include:
- New Mexico State University, Northern Arizona University, University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, Universidad ISA, and University of Puerto Rico-Mayagüez.
What
We are building partnerships to improve how communities prepare for, respond to, and recover from disasters as well as make communities more resilient in the face of climate change.
Our focus is on:
- Supporting vulnerable communities to be more resilient in the face of natural disasters and climate change.
- Connecting research and education to real-world solutions via community engagement.
- Strengthening supply chains and increasing local economic development and production.
- Reducing disaster risks.
- Mitigating disaster damage.
When
- June 2025: First gathering in Petersfield, Jamaica
Where
Our initial work focuses on:
- Puerto Rico
- Navajo Nation
- Jamaica
- Trinidad & Tobago
- Dominican Republic
- With future expansion to other islands and rural communities globally.
Why
Communities face growing risks from disasters made worse by climate change and weak supply chains. By building trusted partnerships and developing solutions together, we can improve community resilience, ensure access to essential resources, and create lasting change. This work supports Vision 2030 Global Strategy priorities of:
- Global Citizenship Education
- Engagement for Impact in the Global South
- Leadership for Innovative Partnership and Development
How
We achieve this by:
- Hosting online and in-person meetings to co-create solutions.
- Engaging community voices and leaders.
- Growing partnerships with scholars and practitioners.
- Offering students real-world learning through Global Classrooms and service-learning trips.
- Measuring success by the number of strong, active partnerships formed.
