Distinguished Fellow for Global Citizenship
As All People Be Happy Distinguished Fellow for Global Citizenship, Dr. Eric Hartman, has made a career out of investigating and advancing higher education’s public purposes, specifically in relationship to community-driven development and its intersection with students’ civic and global learning. These efforts have produced a book, nearly 100 academic and popular articles, and consultancies with a range of universities deepening experiential learning—including Cornell University, Elon University, Harrisburg Area Community College, and the University of Dayton, among numerous others. His faculty and administrative roles have spanned American politics, education, global studies, history, human rights, international development, leadership studies, and public administration at a similarly diverse array of institutions, from the Community College of Allegheny County to Providence College, Kansas State University, Haverford College, and the University of Pennsylvania. Dr. Hartman earned his PhD at the University of Pittsburgh, but he is always quick to clarify that his insights about community, cross-cultural collaboration, and building better possibilities across perceived differences flow from working with APBH (then known as Amizade) between 2003 and 2010. He is lead author of Community-Based Global Learning: The Theory and Practice of Ethical Engagement at Home and Abroad (Routledge, 2018) and a co-founder of the Community-based Global Learning Collaborative. His work emphasizes recognizing shared dignity across perceived differences, listening to an array of perspectives, and building better possibilities together.
