AllPeopleBeHappy Partners with Visions Provide Hope After Cyclone Ditwah in Sri Lanka

When Cyclone Ditwah brought devastating flooding to Northern Sri Lanka, thousands of families were forced from their homes, seeking refuge in temporary safety centers or relying on relatives for shelter. Entire communities across the districts of Kilinochchi, Mullaitivu, and Jaffna faced the loss of essential household items, limited access to clean water, and growing health concerns in the aftermath of the disaster. Through its Relief Funds in the Wake of Cyclone Ditwah initiative, Visions Global Empowerment Sri Lanka is mobilizing an emergency response to help families recover during their most vulnerable moments.

With support from AllPeopleBeHappy, the organization will provide emergency relief packages to approximately 210 families—reaching an estimated 600 to 700 people in the hardest-hit communities. Working in close coordination with local government officials, the project will distribute essential nutrition, hygiene, and medical supplies that complement the assistance already being provided through public relief efforts. Each package will include items such as nutritional food supplements, milk powder, mosquito nets, bedding, hygiene products, and basic medical supplies, helping families meet their immediate needs while reducing health risks associated with displacement and flooding.

The project reflects the power of strong local partnerships and community leadership. Government agencies will help identify the most vulnerable households and coordinate distribution logistics, while local volunteers—including graduates of Visions’ Young Leaders Realizing Dreams program—will assist with packaging and delivering relief supplies. By building on trusted community relationships and engaging young leaders in disaster response, the initiative not only provides immediate humanitarian assistance but also strengthens local capacity to respond to future emergencies.

Although this effort is designed as an immediate response to Cyclone Ditwah, it also lays the groundwork for longer-term recovery. Visions Global Empowerment plans to continue supporting affected communities through future initiatives focused on restoring safe learning spaces, providing temporary shelter materials, and helping families rebuild their lives. By addressing urgent needs today while planning for tomorrow, the organization is helping communities move from crisis toward resilience with dignity, compassion, and hope.

Update: December 15th, 2025

In the aftermath of Cyclone Ditwah, devastating floods displaced thousands of families across Sri Lanka, leaving many without access to basic necessities. With support from AllPeopleBeHappy’s Emergency Fund, Visions Global Empowerment responded quickly to meet urgent needs, adapting its original response plan to focus on Kandy District after government assessments identified it as one of the hardest-hit areas. By working in close partnership with central and district government officials, the organization ensured that emergency assistance reached families whose needs were not already being met through other relief efforts.

Over the course of the project, Visions provided emergency relief packages to 240 families living in temporary welfare camps. Each package included essential items such as mosquito nets, blankets, towels, milk powder, nutritional flour, hygiene supplies, sanitary products, and basic medical essentials. For many families—particularly those in the severely affected Gampola area, where floodwaters rose as high as 30 feet—these supplies offered critical protection during weeks of displacement. The relief packages helped reduce the risk of communicable diseases in crowded shelters while providing children, women, and older adults with the resources needed to stay healthy and safe during an incredibly difficult time.

Beyond the immediate humanitarian response, the project strengthened relationships that will continue to benefit communities long after the floodwaters recede. Visions collaborated closely with government agencies, the University of Vavuniya, community leaders, and volunteers to coordinate logistics, identify the most vulnerable households, and deliver aid despite damaged roads and disrupted transportation networks. Student volunteers and graduates of Visions’ leadership programs played an active role in packaging and distributing supplies, demonstrating how investments in local leadership can also strengthen emergency response capacity.

Perhaps the project’s greatest achievement was its ability to remain flexible in the face of rapidly changing conditions. By adjusting its geographic focus and relief strategy based on real-time needs assessments, Visions ensured that resources reached the communities with the greatest need. The experience reinforced the importance of trusted local partnerships, coordinated disaster planning, and community engagement in effective humanitarian response. As recovery efforts continue, the relationships, experience, and resilience built through this project will help strengthen disaster preparedness and support vulnerable communities across Sri Lanka for years to come.
