AllPeopleBeHappy Supports National Coalition for the Homeless Rapid Relief Fund

The  National Coalition for the Homeless (NCH) has been selected to receive impact funding from AllPeopleBeHappy for their Rapid Relief Fund, an urgent initiative providing essential survival items to individuals experiencing homelessness in the District of Columbia.

In recent months, increased law enforcement activity and encampment raids have left many people without identification, medications, medical devices, tents, blankets, or access to necessities. The Rapid Relief Fund will offer immediate replacement items and emergency support to those directly impacted. The funds will serve as seed funding for a broader campaign that is expected to expand to cities like Chicago, Atlanta, Detroit, New Orleans, and Memphis.

The project aims to reach 150 people in its first phase and ultimately serve up to 1,500 people across multiple communities. Beyond immediate relief, NCH’s outreach teams and volunteers are working to rebuild trust, provide peer support, and advocate against the criminalization of homelessness.

This effort is sustained by a strong network of community partners, including local businesses, universities, and people with lived experience who will help design and deliver the aid. NCH also plans to continue fundraising and seek philanthropic and corporate support to expand the initiative through the winter and beyond.

As winter temperatures dropped across Washington, D.C., the National Coalition for the Homeless (NCH) launched its Rapid Relief Fund project to address one of the most urgent needs facing people living unsheltered: protection from the elements. Guided by the voices and experiences of individuals who have firsthand knowledge of homelessness, NCH identified weather protection as a critical priority and responded by purchasing and distributing severe-weather suits and essential toiletries. These supplies were designed to help people safeguard not only themselves but also their tents, blankets, coats, heaters, and other belongings that are vital to survival during extreme weather conditions.

Through the project, NCH distributed 69 severe-weather suits and related supplies, reaching an estimated 100 individuals experiencing homelessness. The need was especially urgent given the ongoing challenges faced by unhoused residents in the District, including the confiscation of personal belongings and survival equipment during encampment clearances. During a winter in which four individuals lost their lives due to severe weather conditions, the organization believes these emergency resources played a critical role in preventing additional tragedies and helping vulnerable community members stay safe.

The project’s most important achievement is difficult to measure in numbers alone: the preservation of human life. By providing protection from dangerous weather conditions, NCH helped individuals maintain their health, safety, and dignity during some of the most challenging months of the year. Community volunteers supported distribution efforts during Homeless Memorial Day commemorations, ensuring that supplies reached those most in need while also raising awareness about the realities facing people experiencing homelessness.

The success of the Rapid Relief Fund was strengthened through partnerships with organizations including People for the Fairness Coalition, Luther’s Place Church, and the Samaritan Center. Yet the need remains significant. With nearly 900 people still living unsheltered in the area, NCH continues to explore opportunities to expand access to weather-protection supplies and emergency resources. The project serves as a powerful reminder that relatively simple interventions can have life-saving consequences and underscores the importance of continuing to support and protect some of the community’s most vulnerable residents.
