WCYA and AllPeopleBeHappy improve healthcare in high schools in Volta Region
AllPeopleBeHappy and Welfare of Children and Youth Association (WCYA) are collaborating on a project to improve sick bay healthcare in high schools of Afadjato South District, Volta Region, Ghana.
This project will focus on equipping the sick bay at Logba Alakpeti High School in response to urgent health concerns raised by students and staff. The current lack of on-site healthcare poses a significant challenge, as students must seek medical care off campus for even minor issues. The sick bay is already built, but it lacks any furniture and equipment.
By providing basic medical equipment and supplies, WCYA and partners aim to improve student health, minimize disruptions to learning, and eliminate the need for off-site travel for minor health issues.

Update: June 1st, 2025
The construction and setup of the new school sick bay in the Volta region in Ghana are nearing completion, marking a significant milestone in enhancing student health and well-being. Under the guidance of the field supervisor, minor renovations such as painting have been completed, and all medical supplies have been procured in collaboration with the Ghana Health Service to ensure compliance with national standards. After evaluating multiple quotations, the team selected the most suitable supplier, purchased the equipment, and successfully transported all items to the school. The next step will be to install the equipment and prepare the space for official commissioning and handover to the Ghana Education Service and Ghana Health Service.
Although the strengthening of the Ghanaian Cedi against the U.S. Dollar has reduced local purchasing power and presented a financial challenge, the team has remained resourceful and on schedule, successfully implementing the project according to plan.
Success so far has been measured through the completion of key milestones: procurement, delivery, and renovation. These milestones demonstrate the team’s commitment to high-quality execution. This project has been a true collaboration between the Ghana Health Service, Ghana Education Service, and the school community, whose visual arts students contributed their talents to the renovation work.
To celebrate the project’s completion and highlight its impact, the team hopes the AllPeopleBeHappy Site Director will attend the commissioning ceremony and deliver remarks on behalf of the organization.

The sick bay project at Jim Bourton Memorial Agricultural Senior High School has fulfilled its primary goal by establishing a fully equipped medical facility that now provides immediate healthcare access to over 800 students and staff members. Previously, medical emergencies meant long and painful journeys to distant towns, resulting in delayed care and prolonged discomfort. The new sick bay closes this gap, ensuring prompt on-site attention for all.
Ongoing discussions with the Ghana Health Service have paved the way for potential expansion, aiming to extend services to nearby communities and potentially tripling the number of people served. With essential equipment and skilled staff in place, the facility is well-positioned to offer comprehensive primary healthcare beyond the school itself. Many members of the community stopped by to tour the new facility and see the new equipment.
The project’s success is rooted in strong partnerships. Collaboration between WCYA, the Ghana Health Service, the Ghana Education Service, and local authorities has secured lasting support for the sick bay, making sustainability a key feature. Through these partnerships, the facility delivers general health services, preventative care, and ongoing medical support, with plans to develop into a broader community health hub.
The increased accessibility to healthcare is expected to reduce student absences, enhance attentiveness in class, and promote better physical and mental well-being, ultimately leading to improved educational outcomes. This initiative highlights how strategic partnerships and focused, targeted interventions can deliver immediate, substantial, and lasting benefits for communities by transforming local health infrastructure.
