Trinidad & Tobago

Be inspired by NGOs and community members coming together to fight forest fires, protect leatherback sea turtles, and conduct research on marine and forest life.

Port of Spain, Trinidad & Tobago

Our partnership in Trinidad began in 2012 in rural Matelot, and has since expanded to the capital, Port of Spain, as well as to Matura on the east part of Trinidad, and Charlotteville in Tobago. During the program, groups explore these different communities and NGOs of various sizes, offering a glimpse into the diversity that is Trini culture.

MEET OUR PARTNERS

ERIC

The Environmental Research Institute Charlotteville (ERIC) is a not- for-profit dedicated to the sustainability of the people and environment of North East Tobago. ERIC conducts research on coral reefs, shark and ray populations, and main ridge forest. They also manage a coral garden and reef restoration project, and lead many different types of ecotourism tours.

Nature Seekers

A nonprofit organization dedicated to environmental conservation, particularly around the protection of leatherback sea turtles. Nature Seekers works to ensure that the Matura community is the nucleus of the leadership, decision-making, and management of its various initiatives. This involves working with community-based organizations to decide what should happen in the community regarding the protection of the natural resources with the technical advice and guidance from the Forestry Division and other important stakeholders. Based on this community input, Nature Seekers was formed to work towards the protection and conservation of leatherback turtles and at the same time reduce the slaughtering of turtles on land from 30% to zero. Nature seekers is an established nonprofit organization.

Fondes Amandes Community Reforestation Project (FACRP)

FACRP is a community based non-governmental organization which began in 1982. This organization started as a movement of community members working together to eradicate the annual threat of forest fires within the Fondes Amandes watershed. As the organization grew and evolved, the FACRP team addressed more environmental challenges facing the community and Trinidad & Tobago. To date, some of these activities include reforestation, forest fire prevention and suppression, organic seedling propagation, climate change adaptation and resilience research.
